Dental Care

CentraCare - Dental Clinic is a collaborative effort between CentraCare and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

The Dental Clinic is equipped with 10 dental chairs and state-of-the-art dental equipment. Four dental students, one dental therapy student and two dental hygiene students rotate through the clinic on a year-round basis.

Patients are assigned to a dental, dental therapy or dental hygiene student who performs their care. The students treat patients under the direct supervision of a faculty dentist or faculty hygiene instructor.

Full range of general dentistry services at the Dental Clinic include:

  • Examinations
  • Cleanings
  • Fillings
  • Root canals
  • Crowns
  • Dentures
  • Extractions

Goals of the Dental Clinic include:

  • To provide dental care to underserved patients in a rural setting
  • To encourage parents to begin regular dental visits for their children by age one
  • To provide dental, dental therapy and dental hygiene students with an opportunity to practice in a rural setting
  • To promote careers in dentistry among people living in the area
  • To engage area dentists and hygienists in public service
  • To provide health education and service to the community
  • To have a positive influence on the number of dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists choosing to practice in the service area

CentraCare - Dental Clinic accepts most insurance plans, including public assistance programs. All age groups are welcome, and a sliding fee scale is used for uninsured patients.

This is an educational environment, so treatments may take longer than usual.

First tooth? First dental visit!

Schedule your baby’s first dental visit whenever you see the first tooth and no later than his or her first birthday. At the first visit, you will hold your baby while the dentist gives a knee-to-knee exam and checks for signs of any potential problems. Come learn how to properly care for your child’s teeth to maintain good oral health for a lifetime.

Preventing Early Decay

Use a clean soft washcloth to wipe your baby’s gums after every feeding, and especially at bedtime. To prevent tooth decay, never put your baby to bed with a bottle, and avoid passing germs to your baby’s mouth. Don’t put a spoon, pacifier, or toothbrush in your mouth before giving it to your baby.

Keeping Teeth Clean

After the first tooth is in, use a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on a small soft toothbrush and clean the tooth every day. At least once a month, lift your baby’s lip and check the teeth for spots or stains. Set a good example by brushing and flossing your own teeth every day.

This program is sponsored through a grant from Delta Dental of Minnesota Foundation.
