Toward Zero Deaths approach

The Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) approach is based on the belief that even one traffic-related death on our roads is unacceptable. It was first developed in Sweden in 1997 as “Vision Zero” and since then has evolved to several state DOTs, including Minnesota, that have identified zero deaths as a core objective in their Strategic Highway Safety Plans. Minnesota TZD was created in 2003 and is the state’s cornerstone traffic safety program, employing an interdisciplinary approach to reducing traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths on Minnesota roads.
