Together with community leaders and city officials, ACMC Health and Carris Health - Rice Memorial Hospital broke ground on a new $11 million ambulatory surgery center today. The new Willmar Surgery Center will be the second generation of their current facility and offer expanded same-day outpatient surgeries and procedures.

Willmar Medical Services President and Rice Memorial Hospital CEO, Mike Schramm, kicked off the groundbreaking ceremony by talking about the future of healthcare and the benefits this new facility will bring to patients and surgeons in our community. “We’re constantly working to identify new ways to make quality care more efficient and accessible through innovations such as the Willmar Surgery Center,” said Schramm. “By partnering on the second generation of the surgery center, we are working together to respond to the healthcare needs of our community.”

The current Willmar Surgery Center, located on the south end of the ACMC campus, has been serving patients since they opened their doors in December 1986. Thirty years later there is a definite need for more space as well as improvements to reflect the changing needs of outpatient care settings. The new, larger facility will accommodate higher patient volumes by more than doubling the current space to 29,370 square feet. It will include 16 additional rooms for patient areas such as pre-op, recovery, operating and consulting. It will also offer larger reception, waiting and billing areas for increased patient privacy and comfort. The new facility is designed to accommodate future growth with space for additional surgeons and staff.

“Outpatient, same-day surgeries are on the rise due to advancements in surgical technologies and techniques,” said Willmar Medical Services Vice President and ACMC President/CEO, Cindy Firkins Smith, M.D. “Not only does our surgery center focus on ensuring that our patients have the best surgical experience possible, it also allows us to offer patients a convenient, cost-effective option.”

Currently the Willmar Surgery Center performs nearly 7,000 procedures a year and is utilized by 37 different physicians. They will remain open and serving patients until the new facility opens in the summer of 2018.

The new facility will be located on the southwest end of the ACMC-Willmar campus, northwest of the current surgery center location. Demolition of the existing concrete and asphalt on the new site began last week.
