Hyper-what? Why Does My Doc Keep Hounding Me about My Blood Pressure?

Hyper-what?  Why does my doc keep hounding me about my blood pressure? Let’s take the confusion out of high blood pressure by pretending your cardiovascular system is nothing but a system of the following three parts:

  • Pump
  • Pipes
  • Filter

The Pump:
If any pump is required to push against higher pressures long enough, it is more likely to fail earlier than it’s intended service life.  This is true for the heart as well.  Don’t let this be you!

The Pipes:
One particular area in your body that has delicate pipes is your brain.  If these pipes are subjected to high pressures long term, they are far more likely to burst.  When this occurs, we call it a stroke.  Don’t let this be you!

The Filter:
Think of a fine screen filter, designed to remove the smallest impurities.  The finest filters are usually not tough like a metal screen, and this is true for the kidneys as well.  If the kidneys are fed lots of fluid at low pressure like your garden hose, they are pretty happy.  If you blast them with the high pressure nozzle, however, it will cause damage and cause your filter to fail.  Don’t let this be you!

Protect your pump, your pipes, and your filter.  Don’t let the “silent killer”, also known as high blood pressure, creep up on you!
